The Master and Margarita
by Mikhail Bulgakov
directed by Gabriel Gietzki
The arrival of a mysterious gentleman in the city shakes up the lives of the citizens of Moscow. It quickly turns out that Woland, who calls himself a professor of black magic, is a character whose existence is denied by the so-called rational minds. Together with his peculiar retinue (human-voiced cat Behemoth, half-naked witch Hella and others) he came to the capital to wreak havoc among the atheistic cultural elite. Woland's mission is intertwined with the fate of the Master - an apocryphist, the author of the novel about Pilate, whose work drove him crazy - and his beloved Margaret.
Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov is considered one of the greatest novels of the 20th century. Set in the 1930s in Soviet Russia, this symbolic satire of the Stalinist era analyzes the essence of evil, necessary for the existence of good, how darkness is necessary for the existence of light - and presents an original portrait of the devil in the modern world.
According to the director, Woland - the hero of Bulgakov's The Master and Margarita - who was the devil, "appears to us in Kalisz to suggest the awakening of people and the reality that is currently happening at a given moment and time. We tried to to create in the performance, on the one hand, to tell the world of +The Master and Margarita+, but on the other hand, so that the contemporary viewer can hear and see that this is a world that adheres to our reality. I have a habit of not defining performances, but of asking questions" - he said Gabriel Gietzky.
